Happy Birthday Miss J!

In addition to her birthday party over Thanksgiving Holiday, Miss J had a wonderful birthday last Thursday.  Her school does such a great job at recognizing how special birthdays are and makes each child feel extra special by having their teachers go on stage for a Birthday Blessing.  Miss J looks forward to this every year and what makes it even more special is that not only her current teachers are giving the blessing but that her Pre-K and PreSchool teachers are in the audience as well.  Watch our Vlog from last Thursday to see her birthday blessing:

I have been putting together birthday pictures with her interests ever since she was 3 years old. (got the idea from Pinterest of course!) To save you from having to click on links I've included her birthday pictures from 2011, 2012 and 2013 below:

Sunday Afternoon at the Cheer America Platinum Championship

Miss J had her first cheer "competition" yesterday at NRG Arena. She was so excited to perform especially since she came home sick Friday afternoon and spent Saturday resting so she could hang out with her team - the Lil Diamonds.  We had to be there just before 2:30 and the team Mom advised us to feed our cheerleader beforehand because there was a 3 hour gap between arriving and performing. No one wants to deal with 10, hungry, 4/5\6 year olds before they have to go on stage. :-P

Miss J had a small plate of PLAIN pasta and a little bit of orange juice. . . .or so we thought.  I then did Miss J's hair and makeup (her favorite part) and we hit the road for NRG Arena.  All the way there Miss J was in a great mood and spent most of the car ride singing songs from Taylor Swift's new album.  We pulled into the parking lot of NRG and as my Nerd handing over $10 to pay for parking she announced, "I have to throw up." and then proceeded to do so. . . . .EVERYWHERE!! It was all over her uniform, face, car seat and the backseat of the car.

Hubby quickly parked the car, pulled Miss J out and assessed the situation. . .In a word, it was AWFUL.  I told her, "You won't be able to perform. How are you feeling?" Miss J immediately broke into tears and insisted to me that she was fine and wanted to perform. She was wailing and the only way could get her to stop was to tell her, "we'll figure it out." or should I say I would figure it out.  You see, during this time, Hubby was in fine form using words that really should not be said in public, pacing around the car trying to air it out and clean up what he could.  I, on the other hand, was dealing with a little girl crying, NOT BECAUSE she had vomit all over herself, but because she wanted to perform BADLY.  All we had to clean up the car was a small packet of Purell wipes and 2 small packets of Kleenex - THAT'S IT.

I texted one of the team Mom's to tell her what was going on and she couldn't believe it.  I somehow cleaned J up enough so we could walk through the parking lot into the arena.  The team mom met us at the door and told Miss J, "You do not have to perform if you do not feel well. If you do not feel well you should go home." Well, Miss J, AGAIN, started wailing that she wanted to perform. So, Miss J and I headed to the restroom to clean her up.  Amazingly, probably because the uniform is made of a slippery material, I was able clean her up with wet paper towels and by sticking her under the dryer.

Looking at her hanging out with her teammates you would NEVER know she had gotten sick:

I, on the other hand, wanted to go home, take a shower and forget about this whole ordeal.  But instead, I fed my little girl stale popcorn and Sprite (she started complaining she was hungry) and sat through 2 hours of cheer performances before Miss J hit the stage.

In the end, seeing Miss J BEAMING from ear to ear when she walked on stage made it worth it.  My shy little girl, because of her inclusion in cheerleading, is coming out of her shell, gaining confidence and becoming more of her own person.

Lessons I've learned:

1 - Have Miss J wear a T-Shirt over her uniform or even have her put on her uniform top when we get there

2 - Bring scented bodyspray for me to mask any smells. . . .antibacterial soap only takes care of so much.

3 - No more orange juice! Miss J is known to throw up when she eats too much, has too many sweets or drinks too much juice.  For this reason, she's mostly a water drinker. But she's learned how to pour her own drinks and we had leftover OJ from her birthday party. Needless to say, the OJ has been poured down the sink.

Julianna's Pancakes and Pajamas Frozen Party

How's that for a title?
**warning: picture heavy post**

We celebrated Miss J's 6th birthday this past weekend with a Pancakes & Pajamas party.  When deciding on what she wanted to do for her 6th birthday Miss J insisted that she wanted a sleepover with her friends.  5/6 year olds are a little young for a traditional sleepover so I went to Pinterest and searched "pretend sleepover" and up popped Pancakes and Pajamas party ideas.  It was the perfect theme for Miss J!

For a party supply source list and inspiration I used visit our Pinterest board which has links.

I purchased ALOT of decorations for this party that in the end I decided not to use. I finished Christmas decorating (house tour coming soon!) a week before and decided that the house should be the main attraction with a few party decorations throw in. I'm so glad I "let go" because there is nothing better than being told - more than once - that we have a beautiful home, the Christmas tree is beautiful, etc.

November 29, 2014: Pancakes & Pajamas table setup
We rented child sized table and chairs from Avalon Event Rentals and decorated the chairs with hot pink and turquoise tulle. The tablecloth, party runner and plates were purchased at Oriental Trading.

November 29, 2014: Custom Thank You tag tied to party favor box
The printables are from The Party Town on Etsy. I purchased the clear cups and lids from a Ace Restaurant Supply, printed out cupcake toppers on labels, cut them out with my circle punch and used them to decorate the cups. The hot pink and turquoise chevron straws were purchased at Oriental Trading.

I found a picture of a cake decorated to look like a stack of pancakes, sent it to Cakes by Channon and she knocked it out of the park! Everyone LOVED it!!

Pretending to plan parties is one of Miss J's favorite role playing games.  We set up the table the night before and she would not stop fiddling with the placement of place cards, glasses, etc.  It was adorable!

To make things easy on us I ordered pancakes from Kelley's Country Cookin' and provided toppings such as fruit, sprinkles, whipped cream and syrup.  I was so busy serving the girls I did not take a picture.  Visit Ms. Debbie's blog, Life by the Pool...it's just Better, for a picture of the pancakes - they were HUGE!  We ended up with two full trays of leftovers!

After breakfast, we had the girls play in Miss J's room before the BIG surprise.  My nerd said it was like having a petting zoo full of little girls. :-P

The BIG surprise was a visit by Anna and Elsa from Frozen!

They were so wonderful during storytime and had warm hugs for everyone!

They sang three songs with the girls: Do you wanna build a snowman?, Let It Go and For the First Time in Forever.

The Frozen hysteria has yet to pass for these girls! They were beyond happy to have some time with them!

Conversations with Miss J

November 25, 2014: Julianna helping my Nerd at his research lab

Miss J: OOOOOO Daddy...a crescent moon! What's that hole on the moon?

My Nerd: I don't know. You should ask Mommy.

Miss J: Yeah. . .but you're the scientist!

LOVE IT!

Our Cheerleader

October 26, 2014: Before the gym Show Off at NRG
Last Christmas, Miss J was gifted with a Minnie Mouse Cheerleader Costume complete with pom-poms. She was so adorable all year bouncing around the house pretending to be a cheerleader that I asked her if she would like to join a team. I don't know why I asked because the answer was a resounding, "YES!"

After Googling I found a cheer gym not far from our home that a show team for girls 3-5 years old. So, after paying a pretty penny for uniforms, etc. Miss J is a member of the Lil Diamonds show team.  The Lil Diamonds compete only 4 times a year and is a perfect introduction to cheerleading - they learn a routine, stunt sequence and tumbling passes.  The first few practices were a bit rough for Miss J - the coaches don't fool around - but now she's really into it and LOVES performing.

November 9, 2014: At the Houston Cheer Showcase
She's had two performances two far and it is great to see her forming a bond with her teammates in addition to having a team mentality. At her latest performance Grandpa, Grandma, Pop, Gigi, Uncle Tyler and Aunt Bonnie came and she was OVER THE MOON. (even though she didn't show it as she was speechless to see them there)

November 9, 2014: With everyone after her performance at the Houston Cheer Showcase
She has her first "competition" in a few weeks and then 3 more after that - she tells me she wants to join the next level team next season. We'll see. . . .
